My passion for languages started when I studied French throughout High School and onto University, giving me opportunity to teach in France during my teacher training. The ability to speak and understand a foreign language is so important to open the doorway to life in other countries in children's futures. For the time being, it enables them them to communicate when on holiday and show respect to their foreign hosts. An appreciation of the culture of a country also helps to foster positivity, sensitivity and understanding towards the way life in other countries. I encourage children to throw themselves into language learning, lose any inhibitions and try to perfect their accents! We have chosen to learn Spanish to prepare our children for their studies in their next phase of education at our local Secondary Schools..

Spanish in Action

Intent

At Foxhill we are LINGUISTS!

Our curriculum for Spanish ensures progressive coverage of the skills required by the national curriculum. Our chosen themes also provide an introduction to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and communities. It aims to foster children’s curiosity and help deepen their understanding of the world. A linear curriculum has been chosen to allow an opportunity for children to gradually build on their skills. Our curriculum enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish, providing opportunities for them to interact and communicate with others for practical purposes both in speech and in writing. We aim to expose children to authentic Spanish and offer regular opportunities to listen to native speakers. The intent is that children acquire basic skills and understanding in Spanish with a strong emphasis placed on developing their Speaking and Listening ability. These will be further developed in the final year of language learning alongside Reading and Writing skills. We aim to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We intend to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.

Implementation

Lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammatical concepts are built into lessons. Our lessons and resources help children to build on prior knowledge alongside the introduction of new skills. Each series of lessons provides structure and context as well as offering an insight into the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and communities. The introduction and revision of key vocabulary and grammatical structures is built into each lesson. Our lesson inputs are supported by use of native speaker audio.

Retrieval Practise

Teachers will start a weekly session with some retrieval practise of some language that has been learnt in previous lessons. This will often be a quiz or some conversation practise.

Recording Learning

Children's learning outcomes can take a variety of form - written activities, conversations, recorded or live presented to the class. Some children also share their Spanish learning in KS2 assemblies for parents, to develop their confidence in front of a range of audiences.
When children complete written tasks, these could include a mixture of reading, writing or grammatical skills, differentiated as needed by scaffolds such as sentence starts, close or word banks.

Knowledge Organisers / Vocabulary

Children use a knowledge organisers for each lesson of each topics, which includes the key vocabulary for the lesson with a picture prompt. This aids links in memory to associate an image with a word.
