Relationships Education

When I Grow Up - sung by the whole School on RSE Day

00:00 / 03:00

INTENT

The aim of relationships education at our school is to help pupils develop self-respect, confidence and empathy. Pupils will learn about what makes healthy relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in a way that is age appropriate and sensitive to different beliefs. This will include online relationships, and how to seek help if they feel unsafe. Teaching will respect the diversity of families in our community.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Foxhill, we follow the Story Project scheme of work for Health and Relationships Education. Through this, pupils become more expert as they progress through the curriculum, accumulating, connecting and making sense of the rich knowledge that is taught. We teach the statutory aspects of health and relationships education but do not teach sex education. We are flexible in the way that if an issue does arise regarding sex education, this may be followed through with the class, a small group, or an individual, after consulting with parents.

As a school, everything we teach is statutory, set by the Department for Education within the Government, and we teach no aspects of sex education, which is not compulsory for primary schools. The aspect we do teach about is the growing and changing body and changes which children can expect in the upcoming months/ years. Every child is completely different in terms of body development and we take full account of this. Of course everything is taught at an age appropriate level and like previously stated, is the compulsory aspect of Relationships and Health Education (which falls under the umbrella of PSHE). The Relationships Policy is still available on our school website for further reference. Biological terms will be used for body parts, rather than ‘slang’ and the main idea behind this, is to safeguard children, as well as teaching them the correct scientific term. Again, these terms have been carefully thought through and used at an age-appropriate level.
